According to MDOT’s MAXIMUM LEGAL TRUCK LOADINGS AND DIMENSIONS and INFORMATION ON THE MOVEMENT OF OVERSIZE OR OVERWEIGHT VEHICLES AND LOADS, the following criteria are used to determine whether an OVERSIZE/OVERWEIGHT PERMIT (a.k.a. “Special Transport Permit”) is needed.
Without OVERSIZE/OVERWEIGHT PERMIT (This is considered a "normal" load):
Maximum Height: 162 inches = 13 feet, 6 inches
Maximum Width: 102 inches = 8 feet, 6 inches
Maximum Gross Weight: 80,000 pounds (there are some seasonal variations)
With OVERSIZE/OVERWEIGHT PERMIT:
Maximum Height: 180 inches = 15 feet, 0 inches
Maximum Width: 192 inches = 16 feet, 0 inches
Maximum Gross Weight: Can be over 80,000 pounds (see MAXIMUM LEGAL TRUCK LOADINGS AND DIMENSIONS for per-axle weight limits)
